Our eye-catching pendant evokes an unusual Precolumbian nose ornament in The Met collection. The original is made of hammered sheet gold with long projections on each side.
In Precolumbian times this nose ornament was probably viewed as an abbreviated version of an animal mask, most likely feline. The graceful outward projections bring to mind feline whiskers. This intriguing piece was made between the 13th and the mid-16th century by a member of the Sonso, one of three societies of the Calima culture to successively occupy the Cauca Valley in west- central Colombia.
