Maritime Motifs Spiral Shell Drop Earrings
These summery spiral shell earrings made with recycled cast glass reinterpret a detail from a wonderful engraving (1758) in the Museum's holdings. The German artist Franz Michael Regenfuss (German, 1712–1780) was fascinated by exotic natural history specimens, and created an illustrated book of shells and crustaceans upon his relocation to Denmark. There, he won the support of Count Adam Gottlob von Moltke, who had himself amassed an impressive cabinet of shells, and who successfully recommended Regenfuss as engraver to the king. The publication to which this print belongs, entitled Choix de Coquillages et de Crustacés, became wildly popular thanks to the large scale and finesse of the illustrations; their three-dimensional quality is largely attributed to the skillful application of color, most of which was notably executed by the artist's wife, Margaretha Helena.
