John Derian Dark Veinlet Butterfly Mini Decoupage Tray
Decorative gifts for the home, inspired by The Met collection.
This elegant butterfly pays tribute to The Dark Veinlet (1862), a color lithograph published by Louis Prang & Co. in Boston. It belongs to The Butterflies and Moths of America Part 3 series, and now resides in The Met's famed Burdick Collection of American ephemera.
This artful item was crafted exclusively for The Met by New York City–based designer John Derian, who's celebrated for his unique decoupage decorations on hand-blown glass plates, trays, bowls, and more.
We're pleased to present this item in celebration of Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion. The Costume Institute's spring 2024 exhibition reactivates the sensory capacities of masterworks in The Met collection through first-hand research, conservation analysis, and diverse technologies—from cutting-edge tools, artificial intelligence, and computer-generated imagery to traditional formats of x-rays, video animation, light projection, and soundscapes. Approximately 250 garments and accessories spanning four centuries will be on view, visually united by iconography related to nature, which will serve as a metaphor for the fragility and ephemerality of fashion and a vehicle to examine the cyclical themes of rebirth and renewal. The exhibition will breathe new life into these storied Museum objects through creative and immersive activations designed to convey the smells, sounds, textures, and motions of garments that can no longer directly interact with the body.
