Crafted exclusively for The Met by New York City–based designer John Derian, this decoupage tray evokes a 16th-century engraving of Adam and Eve by Albrecht Dürer (German, 1471–1528). Dürer had a lifelong fascination with the proportions of the perfect human form; an interest clearly reflected in this striking depiction of Adam and Eve. Derian's interpretive tray was created in celebration of Costume Art, The Costume Institute's spring 2026 exhibition exploring the connection between clothing and the body. Drawing on The Met's vast collection and beyond, the exhibition pairs garments with works of art to show how clothing shapes identity, creativity, and self-expression across time and cultures.
