Crafted exclusively for The Met by New York City–based designer John Derian, this decoupage paperweight evokes a 16th-century artwork by Marcantonio Raimondi (Italian, ca. 1480–before 1534). Raimondi's richly detailed engraving of Adam and Eve was based on a composition by Raphael (Italian, 1483–1520), one of the leading artists of the Italian Renaissance. Derian reimagines the engraving as a decorative paperweight in celebration of Costume Art, The Costume Institute's spring 2026 exhibition exploring the connection between clothing and the body. Drawing on The Met's vast collection, the exhibition pairs garments with works of art to show how clothing shapes identity, creativity, and self-expression across time and cultures.
