Lawrence: The Photographer Framed Print
The Photographer, 1942. Jacob Lawrence (American, 1917–2000). Watercolor, gouache, and graphite on paper.
Our framed print captures an exuberant moment on a Harlem street—photographer snaps a portrait of a family, a construction worker peers out of a manhole, a horse-drawn cart lugs a bed frame. The Photographer is one of 30 paintings Jacob Lawrence created between 1942 and 1943 on the theme of everyday life in Harlem. The bustle pictured here is characteristic of the Great Migration, a mass movement by which millions of African Americans traveled up from the south to establish new lives in northern US cities.
