Description

Our blown-glass ornament celebrates a leaping hare that decorates a gilded-silver celestial globe with clockwork in The Met collection. This charming ornament design was expressly handmade for The Met by glass artisans in Poland.

The magnificent silver globe on which the ornament is based once rotated to chart the constellations. It was made in 1579 in Vienna by Gerhard Emmoser (German, active 1556–84). The globe is engraved with 52 constellations; Latin for "hare," the Lepus constellation is south of Orion.
