Description

Our unusual pin pays homage to a pair of pectoral discs (patenas) in The Met collection, which were made between the 8th and 12th century by members of the Macaracas culture in Cocle province, Rio Parita region, Panama.

During his fourth voyage to the New World, in 1502, Christopher Columbus sailed along the coast of Central America from present-day Honduras to Panama. During this voyage, he traded for "mirrors" of gold 'perhaps golden discs of this type. A fashionable adornment evoking an intriguing era in the early Americas.
