This artful necklace and earrings set pays homage to the geometric tilework on a washstand (1904) by Charles Rennie Mackintosh (British, 1868–1928). Guided by the philosophy that art and architecture are intertwined, Mackintosh envisioned wonderfully original designs derived from the traditional styles of his native Scotland. The washstand, which is exemplary of Mackintosh's creative prowess at the height of his career and is now displayed in The Met's Modern and Contemporary Art collection, was crafted as part of a remodeling project for an 18th-century residence called Hous'hill. Located in a suburb of Glasgow, Hous'hill belonged to the proprietress of several popular tearooms in the city, many of which were furnished with Mackintosh's designs.
