Photography by Nicholas Alan Cope

The catalogue that accompanies the 2016 Costume Institute exhibition "Manus x Machina" features exceptional fashions that reconcile traditional hand techniques with innovative machine technologies such as 3-D printing, laser cutting, circular knitting, computer modeling, bonding and laminating, and ultrasonic welding. Featuring 90 astonishing pieces, ranging from Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel's iconic tweed suit to Karl Lagerfeld's 3-D-printed version, and from Yves Saint Laurent's bird-of-paradise dress to Iris van Herpen's silicone adaptation - all beautifully photographed by Nicholas Alan Cope - this fascinating book is an exploration of both the artistry and the future of fashion.

Interviews with Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen; Hussein Chalayan, Maria Grazia Chiuri, and Pierpaolo Piccioli of Valentino; Nicolas Ghesquiere of Louis Vuitton; Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough of Proenza Schouler; Iris van Herpen; Christopher Kane; Karl Lagerfeld of Chanel; Miuccia Prada; and Gareth Pugh enhance this expansive and absorbing book.

Andrew Bolton is Curator in Charge in The Costume Institute, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautiful Book The book has many thoughtful details including the typography, paper type and pattern details. I love the way the paper textures vary The Small booklet of interviews is a thoughtful detail. One thing I was disappointed about was that the vinyl plastic book cover started forming bubbles when I unwrapped the book- which made the bookcover less appealing on display.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautiful Details What I appreciate about this book: the photography of garment details, and the interviews with several designers about how they use hand and machine in their personal processes. What I didn't appreciate: the front binding came unglued the first time I opened the book fully. Nonetheless- it is gorgeous and informative.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful book! I will not be able to see this amazing exhibit in person, so buying the book was the next best thing. The pictures are beautiful and I love the close-up detailing. I also appreciate the interview booklet in the back of the book, it is so interesting to see what the designers are thinking! Highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Documentation of a Wonderful Exhibit I bought this after I attended the exhibit because I did not feel like carrying it around NYC while I was there. It is a great way to keep a little piece of the exhibit alive forever. Beautiful photos and amazing art direction/aesthetic of the book. It truly is a treat, and I enjoyed the close-up/detailed photos of the pieces. You can get much closer to the art that way/

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great catalogue This is an example of very well made catalogue with extensive collection of very well taken pictures of the exhibits. The pictures allow for to get flair of the textures, and display well the richness of techniques the exhibition aims at revealing to spectators. I recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stunning The book is stunning, as is the exhibit. Intelligent design at its best. I wish I could say the same about the new MET logo. Dreadful.
