Description

By Carmen C. Bambach

This catalogue accompanies The Metropolitan Museum of Art Department of Drawings and Prints exhibition.

Michelangelo Buonarroti (Italian, 1475–1564) was especially celebrated for his disegno, a term that embraces both drawing and conceptual design. Featuring more than 200 drawings as well as paintings, sculpture, and architectural plans and views, this authoritative volume examines the Renassiance master as "the divine draftsman and designer" whose work, according to Giorgio Vasari, embodied the unity of the arts.

In each thematic chapter, related drawings and other works are illustrated and discussed together, many for the first time, to provide new insights into Michelangelo's creative process. In addition to St. Peter's, other featured projects include the Sistine Chapel ceiling, the Tomb of Pope Julius II, and the architecture of the Campidoglio in Rome.

Carmen C. Bambach is curator in the Department of Drawings and Prints at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfectly appropriate I ordered this book as soon as it became available. It is beautifully bound, printed in Italy, first edition print of this amazing collection. I am a long time student of Michelangelo with many, many books on the Master but I am (once again) engrossed in reading this compelling edition of up-to-date discoveries, theories, stories and critiques of this once-in-a-lifetime exhibit. I attended one of the preview days but need to return to see again what I could not get to and/or see again. A wonderful complete narrative, masterfully illustrated book ! Thank you Met.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Greatly enjoying this book! I ordered this book as I plan to be in NYC next week. By "looking" at the book, and reading as much as I can, my time in the Michelangelo show will be "informed," and my visit, richer. I am reading chapters out-of-order, as I cannot read it all before my trip. Totally enjoying, and thanking Vassar College for her History of Art in the early 1960s. Everything in the book "makes sense." The book comes as a hardback only. I am glad. The packaging of a big book I recently ordered from the National Gallery of Art in DC was superior. More carefully wrapped book. Absolutely no damage. This Metropolitan book has very slight damage to the corners of the book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Perfectly Titled Book This book was a perfect preparation for the show at the Met. I know much of the material but found much that I didn't. It also gives a close look at Michelangelo's draftsmanship, powers of observation and spontaneous creativity and his exquisite craft. A book like this gives an intimate view of his graphic technique and creative process in works that would rarely be seen or understood by the public.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Essential The catalogue of the wonderful exhibition at the Met is essential for scholars and general readers alike with an interest in Michelangelo or the Italian High Renaissance in general. The texts within are very informative, and the quality of the illustrations is excellent. In short, all that one would expect fron a Met publication.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding Catalogue I live in California and purchased the catalog before the trip to New York to see the exhibition. The wonderfully rich cultural and historical descriptions added so much to the experience. The reproductions of Michelangelo's work are outstanding. Highly recommended!
