Description

Our striking pin evokes a gold and silver nose ornament in The Met collection that bears a pair of intertwined serpents. This unusual ornament was originally made in A.D. 390-450 by the Moche people of Peru. Snakes were common in Moche territory, and depictions of them abound.

Nose ornaments made of precious metals were worn by the elite in Peru beginning in the middle of the first millennium B.C.; they remained in fashion until about 700 A.D. They were an essential part of Moche royal costume. This handsome crescent came from the site of Loma Negra in the Piura Valley.

Designed and produced in Colombia by Omar Hurtado and Lina Velasquez. Mr. Hurtado's jewelry reproductions are endorsed by the Gold Museum in Bogotá, Colombia, and are also featured at the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum in San José, Costa Rica.
