Description

This cap is embellished with Piet Mondrian's (Dutch, 1872–1944) Composition (1921), an early example of the geometric mode that the artist would refer to as "Neo-Plasticism." For Mondrian, Neo-Plasticism was a universal style because its emphasis on planar relationships could be extended not only to painting, but to design and architecture as well. In this work housed at the Museum, he used thick black lines to divide the canvas into 11 rectangles, some of which he painted in primary shades of red and blue. Over time, Mondrian would pivot to favor pure primary colors.
