Description

This artful face mask celebrates an evocative painting in The Met collection. In 1893, the Impressionist and passionate horticulturist Claude Monet (French, 1840–1926) purchased a plot of land with a pond in Giverny. With the intention of transforming his acquisition into something "for the pleasure of the eye and also for motifs to paint," Monet created an idyllic water-lily garden, which he painted extensively and experimentally. By the time he began Water Lilies (1916–19), which features on our artful umbrella, Monet had achieved a new and audacious style that approached the realm of abstract art.
