This pendant represents a late 15th-century Russian icon in The Met collection. The original Christ in Glory was painted with tempera on wood, possibly in Novgorod, home of an important school of icon painting.
This type of icon served as a holy object of veneration. By gazing intently upon it, the viewer was believed able to have a sincere and deeply spiritual exchange with the divine Christ.
About this icon, a 20th-century scholar wrote: "The Savior is enthroned by a glory (a red zhomboid), an oval (heavenly powers), and a quadrangle (symbol of earth)—he is thus the ruler of heaven and earth."
