This elegant necklace recalls a rare ancient Egyptian example in The Met collection. The original piece (Dynasty 12, ca. 1950–1885 B.C.) was made during the Middle Kingdom, a time when Egyptian jewelry reached great heights of sophistication. Such adornments not only beautified the wearer but also served as amulets, protecting their owners from harm.
The ancient necklace was found in the tomb of Hepy during the Museum's 1933–34 excavations at Lisht. Like our adaptation it showcases amethyst, which enjoyed its greatest popularity during the Middle Kingdom.
