This beautiful pendant reproduces one of a pair of paintings in The Met collection attributed to Emmanuel Tzanès (Greek, active by 1636–died 1690). Among the greatest artists of the post-Byzantine era, Tzanès worked on the island of Crete.
His exquisitely detailed images of the Virgin and Christ, painted with tempera on wood with a gold ground, are arranged to face each other on the left and right. Their poses and dress follow the Byzantine tradition. The elaborate detailing of the halos reflects contemporary Western influence.
