John Derian Paint Palette Oval Plate
Our oblong dish features a detail from On Painting in Oil and Water Colours, Landscape and Portraits . . . (1839), an illustrated manual for aspiring painters by Theodore Henry Adolphus Fielding (British, 1781–1851). Fielding was both a drawing and aquatint master, likewise known for his large-scale paintings and elaborate colorplate books. In the 19th century, he published a number of instructional guides with Ackermann and Company. These illustrated books disseminated the standards of traditional British watercolor painting, and sold well thanks to the aquatint etching process which, together with hand-coloring, effectively simulated actual watercolor washes.
Adapted from the Museum’s Department of Drawings and Prints, this art-inspired design was made exclusively for The Met by John Derian. Based in New York City, Derian's workshop is celebrated for his unique decoupage creations featuring hand-blown glass.
