Holiday Gift Guide:
Pectoral Disc Pendant Necklace
Size Information
This pendant, nearly abstract in its simplicity, takes its design from a circular hammered gold disc in The Met collection. The original disc was made in Colombia or Ecuador between the seventh and twelfth century A.D.; it is slightly convex and has four suspension holes placed centrally near the top.
Many plain gold Precolumbian discs come from the Narino area of highland Colombia and Ecuador. These are named Capuli for the archaeological phase to which they belong. The present example would have been worn as a pectoral, hung around the neck.
