Holiday Gift Guide:
Peony Etched Double Old-Fashioned Glass
Our elegant double old-fashioned glass was made in Poland and hand-etched in the USA. The pattern adapts a floral detail from a 19th-century silk rank badge in The Met collection; in Chinese art, the peony indicates royalty, rank, honor, and wealth.
By imperial Ming dynasty decree of 1391, decorative embroidered squares were sewn on the garments of Chinese government officials. Often of the finest workmanship and materials, the bird or animal on the badge signified the official’s rank.
