This fanciful pin takes its inspiration from a 19th-century silver chatelaine in The Met collection. Chatelaines, which hung from the waist, were designed to hold sewing, writing, or personal-care implements. The original piece was made in 1887 by the Gorham Manufacturing Company (American, 1831–present), a highly successful and influential silver manufacturing firm, in Providence, Rhode Island. Its sinuous design, fabricated in silver, red glass, and black beads, suggests the emerging Art Nouveau aesthetic of the late 19th century.
