This luxurious adaptation was inspired by a splendid brooch at The Met Cloisters. The setting of the sumptuous gold original, studded with pearls, was possibly made in the German Rhineland in the second half of the tenth century, during the reign of the Ottonian emperors; it was created to preserve an exceptionally rare, Late Antique star sapphire carved with a profile portrait (337–50). Jewels conceived as microarchitecture, such as this one, were worn by high-ranking members of the Ottonian court.
