Description

This decorative container is in the shape of a quince, a sunny yellow fruit similar in appearance to a pear. Our inspiration comes from Basket of Fruit (ca. 1620) by Bartolomeo Cavarozzi (Italian, 1587–1625), also known as the Master of the Acquavella Still Life. This bravura work in The Met collection depicts fruit and foliage in a simple basket against a monochrome ground, evoking Caravaggio’s (Michelangelo Merisi) (Italian, 1571–1610) similar Basket of Fruit (ca. 1595–96). Cavarozzi was a leading exponent of still-life painting in both Italy and Spain, where he accompanied his patron, the nobleman Giovanni Battista Crescenzi, in 1617–19.
