Description

This elegant Christmas card features a reproduction of a manuscript illumination in The Met collection, which was originally created about 1300 in the Upper Rhineland. Here, the letter "R" opens the Introit, or entrance hymn, "Rorate caeli de super" (Drop down dew, you heavens, from above), sung on the Feast of the Annunciation. This feast day was one of the most important in the Church calendar, celebrating the Archangel Gabriel’s announcement to the Virgin Mary that she would be the mother of Jesus.

That moment is exquisitely illustrated on this leaf, which was cut from a Dominican choir book. Probably painted by the nuns of the convent of Sankt Katharinenthal, the figures of the Archangel and the Virgin are pictured against a burnished gold background. The Virgin lifts both hands as the dove of the Holy Ghost whispers in her ear. The detailed refinement of the figures' faces, the elongated sway of their bodies, and the intimate scale of the scene are characteristic of a number of related cuttings, all thought to come from the same manuscript.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love the R I love these card as my first name starts with R so it will be an amusing extra. The color printing on the front is good as is the detail. The sentiment is simple on the inside (written in gold to correspond to the gold on the front.) The paper inside is the matte kind so it will easy to write on for those of you who care about that. I am very happy with these.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from R is for Regal The simple elegance of the illumination is lovely as too the appealing colors against the gold. I was surprised at the size being larger than I expected and am looking forward to addressing these cards to friends and family. I have enjoyed supporting the Museum in this way every holiday season and will continue to do so. Thank you Met, another quality product and happy customer!
