Description

The colorful tin-glazed earthenware known as maiolica reveals much about the culture and spirit of Renaissance Italy. Honoring that legacy, this elaborate umbrella pattern was suggested by the rich, scrolling ornament on a glazed terracotta dish in The Met collection. It was likely made about 1525 at the Bergantini family workshop, one of the most important in Faenza in the first half of the 16th century.
