From the 1880s on, Auguste Renoir (French, 1841–1919) developed a classically inspired style that would prove particularly influential to his avant-garde contemporaries. This elegant double-sided scarf celebrates two of his paintings in The Met collection, created after he ceased exhibiting with the Impressionists in 1877. Sea and Cliffs (ca. 1885) offers an ethereal view of boats on the water before imposing crags, while The Farm at Les Collettes, Cagnes (1908–14), an atmospheric depiction of the artist's estate on the Mediterranean near Nice.
