Description

The attractive geometric motif embellishing this pen sleeve from Retro 1951 reimagines the beautiful decorative ornamentation on an Indian window screen, or jali, in The Met collection. Pierced screens were used extensively in Indian architecture as windows, room dividers, and railings. Dating to the second half of the 16th century, this red sandstone screen is attributed to the reign of the Mughal emperor Akbar (r. 1550–1605).
