Description

Description

Our imposing statement ring has been modeled on a magnificent inscribed ring in The Met collection. The original Byzantine ring, probably made about 1000 A.D., belonged to Leontios of the province of Opsikion, in what is now northwestern Turkey.

The inscription reads: "Lord help Leontios, Patrician and Count of imperial Opsikion guarded by God." Patrikios and komes were Roman titles that shifted in meaning during the Byzantine period; it seems likely that Leontios was the governor of the province or a high-ranking general. Such an impressive gold ring was clearly available only to a member of the aristocracy.
