Our stately ring takes its design from a splendid ring in The Met collection. Crafted in gold with carved nephrite, the original ring is attributed to Iran or Central Asia and dates to the late 15th– early 16th century
The ring's gold shank is cast in the shape of two dragons' heads. It holds a jade stone engraved with religious verses known as the Nad-i 'Ali, an invocation to 'Ali ibn Abi Talib, son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad. The text is written in mirror reverse, suggesting the stone’s possibly use as a seal. Further tiny poetic inscriptions are perhaps invested with protective qualities.
