Samuel H. Gottscho: Financial District, From the Hotel Bossert Poster
The New York cityscape was one of most common subjects of Samuel H. Gottscho (American, 1875–1971). His 1933 photograph, Financial District, From the Hotel Bossert, reproduced for our poster from an original gelatin silver print in The Met collection, is particularly masterful. It shows a panoramic view of downtown New York, dramatically lighted, with the low waterfront buildings of Brooklyn in the foreground and the great towers of Manhattan rising in the background.
