The Museum's sculpture is based on a model by Giovanni Bologna, called Giambologna (Netherlandish, ca. 1529–1608) that was probably cast in the workshop of sculptor Giovanni Francesco Susini (Italian, ca. 1575–1653). Giambologna's models were created for the equestrian statue of Grand Duke Cosimo I de' Medici in the Piazza della Signoria in Florence, which was finished in 1594.
Produced in cooperation with the Princely Collections of Liechtenstein.

I bought this horse in 2002 in the Museum in New York realizing that I certainly never could permit myself to buy such a statue in real bronze. Funny detail: when I left the museum with the box with my new bought piece of art, two impressive guards , suspicious as they were ,may be thought that I was taking away one of the real artworks and it cost me a lot of discussions and referring them to the museum-shop before they believed that I was the ligitimate owner of "the bronze" . I am still happy with this purchase. And, as I just noticed , then it was cheaper than it is now,,,
I had been looking at this horse for more than twenty-five years and finally purchased it. A pleasure to have it in my home, and to be able to see it whenever I choose. Beautifully made....high quality.
I bought this a month ago as a celebration gift to myself and placed it in my entry. The beauty and craftsmanship greet and welcome me when I return home, and if it's been a challenging day, the sculpture lifts my spirits! The shadows and play of light on the contours add more artistic dimension and more ways to contemplate beauty. _x000D_

I bought this horse, of course because it is beautiful, but it has something exceptional since it is at the same time a realist representation of a horse, and, if I may use that expression, a metaphysical horse: it represents the essence and what it is meant by a horse, a platonic horse.
I love this horse. But you'll have to place it somewhere out of reach so people don't monkey with it. Two problems: (1) the body is supported by two very thin legs, and I reckon it wouldn't take much to snap them; (2) the base is very narrow and rocky and the statue will easily tip over sideways. It was designed so you can stick the horse on a fireplace mantel. This base was also designed to be light so as not to put much weight on the two supporting legs. I made my own wider base, of wood, that slips over the one provided to keep the horse from rocking. Worth the trouble.
