Description

Description

In the first century A.D., one particular human image of the Buddha came to dominate the artistic scene. In ancient Gandhara (today's northwestern Pakistan), artistic elements from Hellenistic Greece were combined with the symbolism needed to express Indian Buddhism to create a unique style. Youthful Buddhas were depicted with wavy curls and dressed in monastic robes with classical folds. These figures were shown in a variety of poses.

The reclining Buddha lies on his right side and supports his head in his right hand. This posture represents the moment of his death (parinirvana) at age eighty, when he has reached enlightenment and leaves his physical body. Iconic images of the Buddha's death, based on the Gandharan prototype, became important icons for veneration across the Buddhist world in following centuries.
