Description

Description

Our charming doe was carefully reproduced from an expressive gold figure in The Met collection, which was originally made in the ancient Near East about 2600-2500 B.C. The Museum's reclining doe is said to come from the famous archaeological site at Ur. Its form is superbly executed, as animal sculptures by ancient Near Eastern artists often are.

In the 1920s and 1930s, excavations at the ancient Mesopotamian site of Ur uncovered the remains of the city and a Sumerian cemetery dating to the third millennium B.C. The so- called royal graves at Ur contained many extraordinary finds, including jewelry, cylinder seals, pottery, and metalwork. The best-known Sumerian works in gold are the remarkable objects from these graves at Ur, such as this small but compelling creature.
