Description

The sphinx has a long history in Egyptian art, and the colossal example (ca. 1479–1458 BCE) from The Met collection on our stylish oversize tee portrays the female pharaoh Hatshepsut with the powerful body of a lion and an idealized human head wearing a nemes (headcloth and false beard). Hatshepsut first ruled Egypt as regent and then as senior coruler with Thutmose III, her nephew and stepson. Most statues depict Hatshepsut as an ideal king—a young man in the prime of life—though others portray her as a woman.
