Description

Since its arrival at the Museum in 1917 the Egyptian faience sculpture has been a favorite with visitors, and for many years has been known as "William"—the Metropolitan's unofficial mascot. Like the original, our figurine is decorated with drawings of lotus blossoms and marsh plants which remind us of his favorite habitat, the shallow banks of the Nile River.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A charming guy This is a lovely item, with two flaws: First, it is slightly different from the actual hippo: the body appears to be less rounded, the rushes painted on the side are in slightly different positions, and of course it does not include the worn spots (somehow I thought it would be distressed to resemble the original). Second, the mouth of the replica turns up slightly, whereas the mouth line on the original is parallel to the rush line above. Thus, the replica is sort of smiling, unlike the original. My father gave this to me in 1970, and I promptly lost it. I purchased this replacement recently in memory of a kind gift (his name was William).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Still my absolute favorite. When the met first offered a sculpture of William I wanted one but couldn't afford it. Eventually I did purchase one and still love it. Mine is a much shinier glaze and more mottled turquoise. Later I bought a second one to use in my classroom as I didn't want to bring my personal William to school. This one is more matte and the color more uniform. But he is still as delightful as ever. William is hand finished so there is some uniqueness to each piece.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love my William! I fell in love with William the first time I visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art and saw him on display. When I went to the gift shop I saw the statuette but couldn't afford it then. So happy I have him now.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful gift I had received this hippo as a gift years ago, and when my husband and I were searching for the perfect thank you for a generous couple, we remembered our joy when we received this gift.   The recipients were delighted.   I especially love the card with the history of this hippo.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Does not look like its picture in your catalog The hippo statuette in the Met catalog is light blue. The statuette that was delivered to me is very dark blue.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from William is great! I am someone who lives on the west coast, and I had seen William at the met when I lived back East, and wanted him since 1985. I finally bought him for myself for Christmas. He came in one piece in a timely fashion and I am very happy with my purchase. I got a hippopotamas for Christmas! Thank you

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful! The statuette was delivered in the house of my nephew in Baltimore and he brought me to Barcelona last Christmas. I am delighted, it's beautiful, another archaeological play for my collection!
