Description

Completed in 10 B.C., the Temple of Dendur was commissioned by Caesar Augustus after he became emperor of Rome. By building a temple at Dendur dedicated both to the goddess Isis and two deified local Nubians, Augustus encouraged the Nubian population to view Roman rule in Egypt favorably. Today, the iconic sandstone temple depicted on our cutout bookmark is one of the most beloved works on view at The Met.
