Description

The Met has partnered with Brins, a Brooklyn-based maker of high-quality, artisanal jams, to offer this limited-edition spread featuring floral notes of sweet concord grapes complemented by a deep, salty bite. This bold pairing is inspired by Nichiren (Japanese, 1222–1282), the iconoclastic founder of Nichiren Buddhism who sailed the salty sea into exile on the Japanese island of Sudo.

An artful addition to any pantry, the jar showcases a detail from Monk Nichiren Calming the Stormy Sea (ca. 1835) by Utagawa Kuniyoshi (Japanese, 1797–1861). This vivid woodblock print in The Met collection is part of a series by the esteemed Edo-period artist depicting select moments in the priest's narrative. This especially dramatic scene illustrates a vision of the sect's main devotion: the invocation, "Praise to the Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Fine Dharma," in the ocean waves as Nichiren travels to exile in 1272.
