Description

Since its arrival at the Museum in 1917, the ancient Egyptian faience hippopotamus figure (ca. 1961–1878 B.C.) has been a favorite with visitors, and for many years has been known as "William"– the Met's unofficial mascot. Like the original, our ceramic William® Bank is playfully decorated with drawings of lotus blossoms and marsh plants which remind us of his favorite habitat, the shallow banks of the Nile River.
