Description

By Sheila R. Canby

The Shahnama is a tenth-century epic by the Persian poet Firdausi that chronicles Iran’s mythical history before the founding of Islam. It has been immortalized in numerous illustrated editions, but the sixteenth-century Shahnama of Shah Tahmasp is known as the most beautiful ever created. This new publication, which succeeds the Metropolitan Museum's celebrated out-of-print deluxe facsimile of 2011, reproduces all the illuminated pages of the Shah Tahmasp version, combining the vibrant, high-quality reproductions of the deluxe edition with new information and a smaller, more accessible format. The fascinating text introduces the Shahnama to readers and describes the material world depicted in the intricate paintings. It also includes a brief description of the stories depicted in the illustrations and an illustrated "Who’s Who" to help readers identify major characters in the epic. These features provide readers a deeper engagement with this captivating masterpiece.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Most beautiful & my most treasured book! I bought this book from the Met over 25 years ago when it was first offered as my husband is from Iran & he had told me some of the stories from the Shahnameh. If you want to add something special to your collection of Persian relics or just have a book that has that something "special", then this is the book for you. Very colorful and bright and the miniature illustrations are just so beautiful & the tales are just fascinating to read.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from disappointed text type set The illustrations are marvelous, however, you need a magnifying glass to read the captions under the illustrations among the text. I don't understand why the type is so small, there is plenty of space for larger type. Definitely a design flaw. My recommendation has a reservation for this reason.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow! A very beautiful book! Large full color photos of all the extant "miniatures" (not really so small) from this most opulent of Shahnamas. Before the illustrations, essays describe the material goods shown in the miniatures, with full color photos of similar goods in the Met's collection. Following the illustrations, smaller color photos illustrate the dramatis persona of the stories, and following that, a text section describes each story being illustrated. Very worthwhile if you love Persian art.
