Our unusual tie features a detail of a Japanese porcelain dish in The Met collection, which itself is glazed with a clever design of dishes. This beautiful Edo- period piece (1615–1868) was made about 1690–1720. Known as Nabeshima ware, it is perhaps the most refined and elegant variety of Japanese porcelain, made exclusively for the shogunate family, feudal lords, and the nobility.
