Since its arrival at The Met in 1917, our ancient Egyptian faience hippopotamus figure (ca. 1961–1878 B.C.) has been a visitor favorite, and for many years has been known as “William”—our unofficial mascot. Like the original, our umbrella is playfully decorated with drawings of lotus blossoms and marsh plants that recall his favorite habitat, the shallow banks of the Nile River.
