Description

The Unicorn in Captivity, wool warp with wool, silk, silver, and gilt wefts, ca. 1495–1505.

A contented confinement. The Unicorn in Captivity may have been created as a single image rather than as part of the celebrated series known as the Unicorn Tapestries at The Cloisters. These luxurious medieval hangings vividly depict scenes associated with a hunt for an elusive, magical unicorn. In this print, the unicorn probably represents the beloved tamed. The tapestry shows the mythical creature loosely tethered to a tree and constrained by a low fence. Though he could easily escape he is apparently happy to remain inside, indicated by the ripe, seed-laden pomegranates in the tree, a medieval symbol of fertility and marriage.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Quality but Met needs gift option This was not just a cheap poster but a print of excellent quality on heavy paper. The only downside is that there is no gift option. There was a sticker outside the shipping tube showing exactly what was inside.
