Description

Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, 1853–1890) painted the irises adapted for this umbrella in 1889, during his yearlong stay at the asylum in Saint-Rémy. The cropped composition is divided into broad areas of vivid color with monumental irises overflowing its borders; it was probably influenced by Japanese woodblock prints. Van Gogh's brother Theo wrote of the work: "[It] strikes the eye from afar. It is a beautiful study full of air and life."
