Description

Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, 1853–1890) painted L'Arlésienne: Madame Joseph-Michel Ginoux while living in Arles in the South of France. Seeking respite from Paris, he arrived in February 1888 and stayed for more than a year, lodging first at a hotel-restaurant before moving to a room at the Café de la Gare. Marie Ginoux, the subject of this vivid portrait in The Met collection, ran the café with her husband; Van Gogh depicted his landlady in the regional costume of Arles.
