Exhibited on this sweatshirt is a trio of paintings in The Met collection by the inimitable Johannes Vermeer (Dutch, 1632–1675): Young Woman with a Water Pitcher (ca. 1662), exemplary of the artist's interest in domestic themes and the first work by Vermeer to enter an American collection; Study of a Young Woman (ca. 1665–67), a so-called tronie, or portrait of an intriguing figure, often in fanciful costume; and Allegory of the Catholic Faith (ca. 1670–72), which was made during a period when public celebrations of the Mass were forbidden in the Dutch Republic.
