Viennese Spiral Earrings

The whimsical spirals enveloping these cast-glass earrings recall a late 1920s motif by the Austrian American visionary Joseph Urban (American, b. Austria, 1872–1933). Urban was a celebrated designer of theater and opera sets as well as furniture and textiles, such as the silk piece that inspired our adornments. This particular motif comes from Urban's extensive Franko Prints series of textile samples, many of which are now in The Met collection. While each of the patterns are notably unique from one another, they bear the aesthetic influence of Urban's native Vienna—particularly the renowned design collective known as the Wiener Werkstätte (Vienna Workshops) and his Viennese contemporary Gustav Klimt—and the graphic style of the thriving Art Deco movement.
