Description

Garden at Vaucresson, 1920; reworked 1926, 1935, 1936. Edouard Vuillard (French, 1868–1940). Distemper on canvas.

Vuillard painted this idyllic scene at Vaucresson, a residential suburb west of Paris, where his art dealer Josse (Jos) Hessel had recently purchased the house pictured in the background. Jos's wife Lucy was one of Vuillard's great muses and great loves—their relationship lasted some three decades until the artist's death in 1940. Lucy makes a subtle appearance to the left of the painting's primary figurative subject: her cousin, Marcelle Aron.
