Since arriving at The Met in 1917, our ancient Egyptian faience hippopotamus figure (ca. 1961–1878 B.C.) has been a Museum visitor favorite, and for years has been known as "William"—our unofficial mascot.
Like the original, the hippo figure on our boxers is playfully decorated with drawings of lotus blossoms and marsh plants that recall his favorite habitat, the shallow banks of the Nile River. These boxers make a great gift, whether the recipient's taste runs to ancient Egyptian art, wild animals, or fun and colorful patterns.
