This hand-painted resin ornament pays homage to "William," the unofficial mascot of The Met. Hang him on your tree or add him to your holiday decor for a touch of whimsy.
The original hippopotamus statuette (ca. 1961–1878 B.C.) in The Met collection demonstrates the Egyptian artist's appreciation for the natural world. Beneath its blue-green glaze, the body was painted with the outlines of river plants—just like this ornament—symbolizing the marshes in which the animal lived. Since its arrival at The Met in 1917, William has been a visitor favorite.

This fine hippo, William, dates from ancient Egypt and carries the simple message: protect my ecosystem. This animal, also known as the river horse, needs fresh moving water to breed and survive. Having this reminder helps me be a better steward of the water supplies of our planet. Buy one and help us all!
I expected it to be brighter and less heavy -- had to place it in the very bottom of the tree too avoid risk of it falling and breaking something on its way
I gave it to my daughter to decorate their Christmas tree. My 9 year old granddaughter fell in love with William! She arranged an angel ornament so she would be seen dancing on William's back. Thank you!
Every time i’m in NYC, I visit the Met and head for the Egyptian area and for a glimpse of “William” a 4000 year old Egyptian artifact. The unofficial mascot of the Met is a charming likeness of a Nile hippo adorned with tracings of some of his favorite aquatic plants. The ornament is a faithful copy in miniature and brings me additional holiday cheer when he occupies a prominent spot on our Christmas tree
I bought this as a gift for my son and his girlfriend to use on their first Christmas tree. They were both pleased as William is special to all of us as a symbol of meeting up and going to the Met when we visit NYC. Plus, a smiling blue hippo is just what seems to be needed right now.
