Description

The Met's charming hippopotamus statuette (ca. 1961–1878 B.C.), molded in a ceramic material made of ground quartz, demonstrates the ancient Egyptian artist's appreciation for the natural world. Beneath the blue-green glaze, the body was painted with the outlines of river plants, symbolizing the marshes in which the animal lived. Since its arrival at The Met in 1917, "William" has been a visitor favorite. Our whimsical pin celebrates this beloved figurine.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Attractively idiosyncratic piece! I enjoy the idea of this copy of ancient jewelry with which I share a name. It's distinctive in its age, shape, and color, and it gives me pleasure to think of the name association.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hip-hip hooray! Having previously purchased the William scarf, which I love, I couldn't resist the William pin. After all, I am a "pin person" and have a nice collection of pins, many of which have come from the Met Store. The William pin is beautifully designed and well crafted. I recently wore it to a casual breakfast with the keepers marking the first birthday of Winnie, the baby hippo at Memphis Zoo, but it also adds a lovely accent to dressier outfits.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Expensive but beautiful I have been in love with William ever since I first visited the Met many, many years ago. I own so many versions of William and decided that I needed to have this one as well. Even though it is very expensive, I am glad to own another version of my hippo!
